The Method

Learn through play and reflection.

IMM uses improvisational play to help people notice what is happening within them, discover what it may reveal, and carry that learning into life beyond the game.

The big idea

Notice how you respond during play.

Play gives us an experience to examine. By noticing what happens within us—our thoughts, emotions, choices, and reactions—we can uncover something meaningful, reflect on it, and explore how it applies beyond the game.

The game creates the experience. IMM creates the opportunity to discover what the experience can teach us.

Inside the framework

How play becomes insight.

The five movements guide participants from an activity to reflection and everyday application.

Play

Take part in a shared experience.

Observe

Notice your thoughts, feelings, and responses.

Reveal

Identify a response or pattern to explore.

Reflect

Explore what it means to you.

Apply

Consider how to apply what you noticed.

01

A different kind of improv

You don’t have to be funny. You don’t have to be quick.

Just be you.

IMM uses improv because of what happens when people play—not because the goal is to turn people into performers.

Improvisation creates moments of spontaneity, uncertainty, listening, choice, mistakes, adaptation, imagination, and connection. Those moments give us something to explore.

What may become visible

What you might notice.

IMM does not prescribe a single lesson. It creates conditions in which individuals and groups can become curious about their own experience.
